Umgeni River Bird Park
Riverside Road, Durban North, Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, 4051
Located just outside downtown Durban, Umgeni River Bird Park is home to hundreds of birds, with some 200 species from around the world represented here. Spanning 8.6 acres (3.5 hectares), the park is a perfect respite from the bustle of the city. The park has a conservation mindset and works to breed and repopulate endangered species.
The basics
A visit to the park is an ideal way to blend education and relaxation. Wander past natural waterfalls and through aviaries as you learn about the birds’ conservation status and the park’s work to help vulnerable species. Make sure you catch the flight show, which showcases birds such as owls, cranes, and a Cape vulture. It’s an incredible opportunity to see rare birds in an unrestricted environment where they can fly as they would in the wild.
Things to know before you go
Bring water and wear comfortable shoes so you can enjoy your wander.
No dogs are allowed at the park on account of the birds.
There’s a small café if you need refreshments.
How to get there
From downtown Durban, it’s a 10-minute drive along the M4 to the park, where a parking lot is available. If you don’t have a car, both taxis and ride-hailing services are common and affordable in Durban—just make sure the taxi is licensed and agree on a price beforehand.
When to get there
Plan your visit around the bird show: It occurs once in the morning and once in the afternoon, weather permitting. You can check the park website for the most recent schedule. However, you may wish to visit in the morning before the temperature rises to see the birds when they’re more active.
Baby birds galore
The park breeds and raises over a dozen endangered species. It is particularly known for its wattled crane breeding program—only 250 of the critically endangered birds are found in South Africa. The park feeds its baby birds every hour; you can watch this sweet spectacle through an observation window.
