Underground Jerusalem

The basics

The underground city is open to visitors, who can use the same underground tunnels that residents would have used 2,000 years ago. The most notable tunnel in the area is Hezekiah’s Tunnel. He constructed tunnels to bring water to the people within the city walls; this is even quoted in the Bible: “the acts of Hezekiah and all his might, and how he made the pool and conduit and brought water into the city” (2 Kings 20:20). There are two other major underground systems in the area: Solomon's Quarries and Solomon's Stables.

Guided tours take visitors to explore the tunnels of Underground Jerusalem: touring with a guide is the only way to visit and your exact experience will depend upon your selected tour company. For those short on time, a combination tour that includes Underground Jerusalem along with a tour of the city’s above-ground historic sites is a good option.

Things to know before you go

• Be sure to wear good walking shoes. Water shoes are recommended.
• Some tours provide flashlights, but it’s a good idea to bring one just in case.
• Underground Jerusalem is not wheelchair-accessible.

How to get there

The tunnels are located underneath the heart of Jersualem’s Old City. As entrance to Underground Jerusalem is by guided tour only, your guide will take you to the starting point of your experience.

When to get there

Underground Jerusalem is open daily, with shorter hours during the winter months. Note that the attraction closes early on Fridays and holidays.

The Western Wall Tunnels

The part of the Western Wall visible above ground is only a small part of the entire wall. Touring through the tunnels allows visitors to reach the segments of the wall hidden from view. While walking through subterranean spaces you’ll see such archeological findings as large stone arches, water pits, and an ancient water aqueduct that ends at the Strouthion Pool, which served Jerusalem residents and pilgrims as a reservoir for drinking and cooking water.
