Unicorn Gundam Statue

1 Chome, Tokyo, Japan, 135-0064

The RX-78-2 Gundam statue from the manga/anime series Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn was Odaiba’s most eye-catching resident for a long time. But in 2017, the 64.6-foot (19.7-meter) high Unicorn Gundam statue replaced it. Taller than its predecessor and able to transform from Unicorn to Destroyer mode, the Unicorn Gundam Statue certainly makes an impression.

The basics

Although it’s hard to imagine a huge transforming robot statue fitting in anywhere, the Unicorn Gundam Statue does just that in Odaiba. The artificial island is known for its high-tech, futuristic attractions and architecture, so Unicorn Gundam seems right at home. He stands outside the large DiverCity Tokyo Plaza shopping mall—you decide whether he’s guarding the entrance or welcoming you in.

You can visit the statue while visiting Odaiba independently or on a guided tour. It’s difficult to miss when you’re in the area.

Things to know before you go

  • Although the statue doesn’t make any sudden movements—its transformations are scheduled for certain times—younger kids might be spooked by it.

  • What’s the difference between the statue’s two modes? In Unicorn mode, you can see its single horn; in Destroyer mode, the hidden light panels are revealed.

  • You don’t need to be a Gundam fan to appreciate this impressive statue, so add it to your Odaiba itinerary regardless.

How to get there

The Unicorn Gundam Statue is in front of the DiverCity Tokyo Plaza Mall on Odaiba Island. The closest stations are Daiba on the Yurikamome Line and Tokyo Teleport Station on the Rinkai Line. From either station, it’s just a short walk. Alternatively, you can walk or drive over the Rainbow Bridge, which connects Odaiba with the mainland. There’s plenty of paid parking at the mall.

When to get there

Unicorn Gundam “transforms” between Unicorn and Destroyer mode four times daily, from late morning until early evening. The transformation only lasts a few seconds, so get your cameras ready and don’t blink for too long. After dark, the statue is lit up. Anime clips and Gundam music are played on the mall wall behind the statue for several hours every evening.

Shop at the Gundam Base

Gundam fans won’t want to miss the Gundam Base within the DiverCity Tokyo Plaza Mall. The Gundam-themed store sells various Gundam models and merchandise, plays clips on large screens on the walls, and has a special factory zone and build room. It’s very popular, so entry may be restricted or timed at busy times.
