POINT OF INTEREST

Val di Mello

Val Masino Province of Sondrio, Italy, 23010

Tucked in the Alpine Val Masino just south of the Swiss border, the pristine Val di Mello is considered one the most picturesque corners of northern Lombardy. A protected nature reserve, this river valley offers scenic trails through thick forests and past crystalline lakes, rushing streams, and postcard-perfect waterfalls. It’s a popular day trip from Milan and the towns lining Lake Como, especially for anyone who enjoys hiking and cycling.

The basics

Most hiking and cycling excursions to Val di Mello set off from Milan or Lake Como; excursions typically combine round-trip transport to the nature reserve with a guided hike or bike ride along the valley’s trails. The path sets off not far from the valley’s parking area in San Martino and takes about 4 hours to complete on foot. The route is relatively level with a slight ascent at the endpoint, so easy to tackle for walkers or cyclists of all ages and skill levels.

Things to know before you go

  • Wear sturdy shoes, sunblock, and a hat to hike or cycle through the Val di Mello.
  • There are a few mountain huts (known as rifugi) set along the valley floor, serving simple meals, drinks, and snacks.
  • Visitors can take a dip in the river and lakes, but the water is icy cold all year round.
  • Top up your phone or camera batteries to capture the spectacular Alpine views and picturesque lakes as you explore.
  • Val di Mello is a particularly family-friendly excursion; its level path is suitable for young hikers and there’s ample shade along the route.
  • The path is not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers due to the uneven surface along stretches of the route.

How to get there

Val di Mello in the Val Masino can only be reached by car. It’s about a 2-hour drive from Milan or an hour from the northern shore of Lake Como. There is ample free parking in the village of San Martino, which is about a 20-minute walk to the valley’s entrance—the route to the trail is well signposted.

When to get there

The Alpine climate of Val di Mello offers cool relief from the summer heat, making the nature reserve a popular destination from June to September. May and October are particularly scenic with the landscape in full bloom, while seasonal rains can make the trail tricky in the early spring and fall.

Mountain huts in Val di Mello

Despite its remote Alpine location, the Val di Mello is home to a smattering of tiny mountain huts that offer dining and, in some cases, overnight lodging to passing hikers and cyclists. Stop to feast on local specialties against the backdrop of the surrounding peaks, like polenta topped with meat sauce, pizzocheri (buckwheat pasta), and artisan cheeses and charcuterie served with local wine and beer. Alternatively, book an overnight for a unique Alpine experience.
