Villa Lobos Park
Av. Prof. Fonseca Rodrigues 2001, São Paulo, Brazil, 05317-020
One of the best places for outdoor recreation in all of São Paulo, Villa Lobos Park (Parque Villa Lobos)—located next to the Pinheiros River, west of the city center—combines areas of natural beauty, sporting facilities, and cultural programming. Named for Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos, the green space has peaceful trails, a library, an amphitheater, and even an orchidarium.
The basics
Sprawling across 181 acres (73 hectares), Villa Lobos Park is one of São Paulo’s largest public parks. With its orchidarium and a “tree circuit” (a forested walking trail that winds past native plants), as well as bike rentals, the park is an essential green lung in this always-bustling, skyscraper-packed city.
But that’s only the start of what the park offers visitors; there’s a wealth of recreational activities for those of all ages to discover. Sporting facilities include basketball courts, tennis courts, cycling and running tracks; there’s a library, a carousel, temporary exhibitions, and public artworks to admire; plus opportunities to grab a bite from food vendors, or bring your own snacks to the designated picnic areas.
Things to know before you go
Villa Lobos Park’s trails and facilities are accessible to disabled visitors.
Visitors are welcome to bring their own food and drinks for picnics, although barbecues are not permitted.
The park’s tennis courts and other sports facilities can be reserved for free; book in advance via its website or in person at reception.
There are a range of bathrooms and snack areas.
The park is free for all to visit, although some of its exhibitions may be ticketed.
How to get there
Villa Lobos Park is located at Professor Fonseca Rodrigues Avenue in São Paulo. To get there via public transportation, take Line 9 of the São Paulo Metro to Villa Lobos-Jaguaré station, located just a quick walk away. A number of bus routes serve the area, while taxis and rideshare services offer a convenient way to travel.
When to get there
Villa Lobos Park is open daily, from early in the morning until early evening; sports courts and facilities close 30 minutes before the park’s closing time. Note that the park is likely to be crowded on weekends and during holidays; visit during a weekday for a calmer experience.
Candido Portinari Urban Park
Located right next to Villa Lobos Park, Candido Portinari Urban Park offers further opportunities for recreation. With amenities like a skate park, a dog area, and walking trails—as well as the Roda Rico, a giant Ferris wheel that offers panoramic views of the city—it’s a great place to continue your day out.
