POINT OF INTEREST

Vitoria-Gasteiz

Gasteiz, Álava

Often overlooked by tourists on their way to San Sebastián or Bilbao, Vitoria-Gasteiz is a seldom visited gem and the capital of the Basque Country. This city is home to one of the region's best preserved medieval centers and plenty of historic architecture, plus it’s only a short distance from the Spanish vineyards and wineries of La Rioja.

The basics

Vitoria-Gasteiz's medieval city center features several notable sights, like the Gothic Santa María Cathedral, dating back to the 13th century, Virgin Blanca Square, and the Bendaña Palace, which is home to a unique museum dedicated to playing cards. Head to Eduardo Dato Street for shopping and to sample pintxos, the small bite-sized appetizers served in Basque Country. Tours of the city's medieval quarter are often combined with a visit to La Rioja, and include wine tastings plus scenic countryside views.

Things to know before you go

  • The city's medieval quarter is known as the Medieval Almond, because of its shape.
  • Modern art lovers won’t want to miss the Atrium Museum.
  • A series of parks and forest paths, known as the Green Belt of Vitoria-Gasteiz, completely encircles the city.
  • Vitoria is easy to explore by walking, biking, or taking the public tram.

How to get there

Vitoria is located (62 kilometers) from Bilbao and (99 kilometers) west of Pamplona and it is easily accessed by car from anywhere in the Basque Country. The city is home to a small regional airport, but most visitors fly into Bilbao. There is also direct train service to Vitoria from Barcelona and Madrid.

When to get there

Since Vitoria-Gasteiz is a bit off the tourist radar, it’s a great spot to visit during Basque’s busy summer season. The city hosts two international music festivals in the summer: an annual rock festival in June and a jazz festival in July.

Visiting Spain’s Rioja wine region

Vitoria-Gasteiz makes a nice base for venturing into Spain’s Rioja wine region. With over 600 wineries, it can be overwhelming to figure out where to visit, so taking a guided tour is a great way to get acquainted with the area—plus you won’t have to worry about driving.
