Volvo Museum

Arendal Skans, Gothenburg, Sweden, 405 08

Sweden’s most famous automobile brand is the subject of the eponymous Volvo Museum, located on the Gothenburg island of Hisingen. Chronicling the company’s humble beginnings in Gothenburg in 1927 to its status today as a globally renowned vehicle manufacturer, the museum provides a fun and fascinating insight into the world of Volvo.

The basics

Spread over 86,100 square feet (8,000 square meters) and two floors, the Volvo Museum will interest anyone curious about cars, engineering, and technology. Follow the history of one of Sweden’s most-loved brands and learn about co-founders Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larson. Be sure to admire the more than 100 vehicles from the Volvo range, which include trucks, marine engines, aircraft, and today’s concept vehicles. Highlights include the very first ÖV 4 car and displays of Volvo Aero and Volvo Penta products.

Things to know before you go

  • Leave yourself a minimum of 45 minutes to visit the museum.

  • There is an admission fee for the museum; advance reservations are not possible.

  • Plenty of free parking can be found outside.

  • Facilities at the museum include a café, gift shop, children’s playground, and restrooms.

  • The museum is accessible for wheelchairs, but it’s recommended to call ahead.

How to get there

The Volvo Museum is located on the island of Hisingen in the Arendal district of Gothenburg. Located 6.2 miles (10 kilometers) west of downtown Gothenburg, it’s about a 20-minute drive, or you can ride the tram (lines 5, 6, or 10) to Eketrägatan, then take bus 32 to Volvo Torslanda/Arendals Skans. Be aware that the bus only runs by advance reservation on weekends.

When to get there

The Volvo Museum is open from mid-morning to late afternoon, Monday to Friday, and from late morning to mid-afternoon on weekends. It rarely gets overcrowded, so anytime is a good time to visit, but it’s easiest to visit on a weekday if you don’t have your own car.

Visiting Gothenburg’s museums

Gothenburg’s museums span all tastes, and a Go City Gothenburg Pass affords admission to many of them. Dive into natural history and science at the innovative Universeum, marvel over Nordic art at the Gothenburg Museum of Art, and see Sweden’s only exhibited Viking ship at the Museum of Gothenburg.
