Vor Frue Kirke

Frue Kirkeplads 3, Aarhus, Denmark, 8000

Part of the oldest religious complex in Aarhus, Vor Frue Kirke (or the Church of Our Lady) offers a fascinating glimpse into the city’s architectural evolution. With an 11th-century crypt and an adjacent Dominican monastery established at the beginning of the 1200s, this complex is a must-see for history buffs. The Gothic Revival-style church itself dates from the late 19th century and is among the city’s most striking landmarks.

The basics

Located not far from Aarhus Cathedral in the city’s old town, Vor Frue Kirke is a highlight of most small-group or private city sightseeing tours by foot or bike, along with landmarks like the Aarhus Theater and the Vadestedet riverfront. Self-guided audio tours of the historic center also typically include a stop here to take in the brick exterior and interior central nave, crypt, and the abbey chapel that sits within the monastery garden.

Things to know before you go

  • The oldest part of the complex is the crypt located below the church, so don’t overlook this gem when visiting.

  • Photography inside the church is permitted, but be respectful when visiting this active place of worship.

  • There is no dress code, but it’s good form to wear modest clothing when entering.

  • The church, crypt, and monastery are free to visit.

  • The church and complex are only partially accessible due to steps.

How to get there

Vor Frue Kirke is located in the historic center of Aarhus, a short walk from the most important historic sights in the city. Aarhus is the main transport hub in the Jutland region with a busy airport, ferry port, train station, and bus terminal. The local bus system runs to the church from locations across the city.

When to get there

The church is open from 10am to 4pm on weekdays and between 10am and 2pm on Saturdays. The church is only open to worshippers on Sundays or religious holidays, when services are held. Visit during the midday hours on a bright day to admire the interior of the church, which can be dark when it’s overcast.

A historic walk through Aarhus

The city of Aarhus is home to a pretty old town with historic churches, townhouses, and squares that can be visited on foot. Take in the 12th-century Aarhus Cathedral and the Store Torv old market square just outside, stroll through the Latin Quarter with its 18th-century homes and shops, then head to Vor Frue Kirke to visit the church and monastery. End with a stop at Den Gamle By to see how the town has looked over the past few centuries.
