POINT OF INTEREST

Wako Ginza

4 Chome−5−11, Ginza, Japan, 104-8105

Ginza Wako is a prestigious department store offering high-end goods, including luxury watches, handbags, jewelry, and fashion items. As well as coming to shop, visitors flock here to capture photos of the iconic Hattori Clock Tower—which dates back to 1932 and has even appeared in the Godzilla movies. You’ll also find an art gallery and gourmet chocolate and tea shops.

The basics

Most people visit Wako independently to shop, but the department store is often visited during guided tours that reveal some of Ginza's most interesting architecture. These tour itineraries sometimes stop by temples—such as Tsukiji Hongwanji Temple—as well as the Nicolas G. Hayek Center, the Kabukiza Theater, and the Okuno Building. It may also be passed on guided walking tours of Ginza that feature other highlights beyond architectural gems, such as tours that tell the story of Tokyo’s Kabuki scene.

Things to know before you go

  • If you get hungry, there’s an on-site tea parlor, but preschool children aren’t permitted to enter.

  • Smoking is prohibited throughout the store.

  • If you need a watch repaired, there is a repair counter on the first floor.

  • There is free on-site Wi-Fi available at Wako.

  • Wako is wheelchair-accessible with accessible restrooms.

How to get there

Located in Tokyo’s bustling Ginza district, Wako is in close proximity to multiple subway stations. The most convenient one is Ginza Station, which is only a 2-minute walk away. You can choose from multiple lines to get here—including the Ginza, Hibiya, and Marunouchi lines. If traveling by car, Wako doesn’t have a dedicated parking lot, so it’s recommended to park nearby, such as at the Nishi-Ginza Parking Lot.

When to get there

Wako is usually open daily from mid-morning until early evening, however, it may be closed during public holidays and the New Year period. For the best experience, visit in the morning or late afternoon, when the crowds are typically smaller. Weekdays provide a quieter shopping environment compared to weekends, which can be bustling with visitors. As for the time of year—the store is particularly vibrant in the run-up to New Year.

Places to eat near Ginza Wako

If you’ve worked up an appetite after a visit to Wako, there are lots of great food options close by. Ginza Kimuraya offers delicious pork katsu sandwiches, while Wako Annex Tea Salon is a great spot for tea, cake, and chocolates. For more substantial bites, Minari offers delicious Korean food, and Ginza Syabuki has sukiyaki and shabu-shabu dishes.
