POINT OF INTEREST

Walsingham Nature Reserve

Hamilton Parish

The best of Bermuda’s natural beauty is packed into this 12-acre (5-hectare) nature reserve—home to a dense expanse of forests, caves, and mangrove ponds that double as swimming holes. Dubbed “Tom Moore’s Jungle” by locals (after the Irish poet who wrote about it), Walsingham Nature Reserve also encompasses the smaller Blue Hole Reserve and Idwal Hughes Nature Reserve.

The basics

Set on the eastern side of Bermuda, looking out toward Castle Harbor, Walsingham Nature Reserve has a rugged, tucked-away feel. Most people come to swim in the popular Blue Hole (a deep, aquamarine sinkhole filled with colorful fish) but you can also hike the trails, swim, investigate caves, and go cliff jumping. A private Bermuda shore excursion helps you maximize your time—many include the option to visit Walsingham Nature Reserve, too.

Things to know before you go

  • Walsingham Nature Reserve appeals to outdoor adventurers and those looking for an alternative to a Bermuda beach day.

  • Put aside at least two hours in the reserve to hike and swim.

  • Bring a flashlight if you plan to look in the caves.

  • With terrain that covers forests and caves, the nature reserve is not wheelchair accessible.

  • Water shoes are a good idea to help you walk on the rocks if you plan to swim.

How to get there

Set on the northeastern side of Hamilton Parish, the nature reserve’s main entrance and small parking lot are on the south side of the road, just before the causeway. Bermuda bus routes #1 and #3 to/from Hamilton and St. George also bring you here. From the parking lot, follow the footpath into the jungle-like greenery ahead.

When to get there

The whole nature reserve is open to the public from sunrise to sunset. If you plan to swim in the Blue Hole, the warmest time for a dip—like everywhere in Bermuda—is in the summer, between May and September. While the site isn’t a well-known attraction, the Blue Hole will be busier during these months.

How to dine like the poet Thomas Moore

Thomas Moore was an Irish poet who spent a little time in Bermuda, quickly becoming enamored with the scenery as well as a local (married) lady whom he named Nea in his poems. Those interested in the history can reserve a table for dinner in Tom Moore’s Tavern in Walsingham Nature Reserve, one of the poet’s favorite places to dine. This old-world eatery is known for its upscale vibe, so it’s best to change out of the outdoor adventure clothes first.
