POINT OF INTEREST

Water Kingdom

Essel World, Global Pagoda Road, Gorai Island, Mumbai, Maharashtra, 400092

Touting itself as Asia's largest aquatic theme park, Water Kingdom is an expansive water park spread in the northern outskirts of Mumbai, right by the sea. As the name suggests, attractions here are centered around water, with all sorts of pools and slides—one of which features a 7-story drop and reaches speeds of up to 40 mph (64 kmp).

The Basics

This huge park is spread across 64 acres (26 hectares) and features a variety of aquatic attractions, with plenty of rides geared toward the youngest of visitors. At the heart of the park is the giant Wetlantic Wave Pool, which sits around a giant faux volcano. In addition to water rides, Water Kingdom has a fish-pedicure spot.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Water Kingdom is a must-visit for families and is suitable for people who do not know how to swim.

  • Make sure to wear plenty of waterproof sunscreen, as the sun here can be brutal.

  • Visitors should bring their own swimwear. Female travelers may feel more comfortable wearing T-shirts over their swimsuits, as most Indian women do.

  • Outside food is not allowed, but there are plenty of places to eat inside the park.

How to Get There

Water Kingdom is located outside Mumbai, about two hours by car from the Fort area, without traffic. If you’re coming by train, get off at the Malad or Borivali station and then take an auto rickshaw to Marve-Malad or Gorai-Borivali, respectively, where you can catch a park-run ferry right to the park. Ferries from Gorai-Borivali operate every 15 minutes; those from Marve-Malad run every half an hour, with a break in operations from 3pm to 6pm.

When to Get There

The water park is open daily from midmorning until night, but it's a good idea to arrive early to beat the crowds. A year-round attraction, Water Kingdom is nevertheless at its most pleasant during the dryer, slightly cooler months of November through March. Note that weekends, particularly Sundays, can get very busy here.

Esselworld

Right next to Water Kingdom sits its sister park, Esselworld, a more traditional theme park featuring rides from Ferris wheels to roller coasters. There's a good mix of thrilling options and kid-friendly family rides here, along with a wide range of restaurants and activities, including a large shopping area.
