POINT OF INTEREST

Western Australian Museum – Perth

Perth Cultural Center, Perth, Western Australia, 6000

Vast and full of a surprising assortment of exhibits, the WA Museum Boola Bardip of the Western Australian Museum thoroughly looks at every aspect of life in the Western state. Stories from Australian Aboriginals sit alongside mineral collections, sports memorabilia, and a blue whale skeleton in this immense cultural museum.

The basics

With many wide-ranging topics to explore, spread across three levels, it’s best to explore the WA Museum Boola Bardip independently and at your own pace. You can easily spend several hours to half a day at the museum, especially if you’re interested in wildlife, history, Aboriginal folklore, and more. However, if you’re short on time, you can take a Highlights Tour for a quick 1-hour look at the museum’s exhibits.

You can fill the rest of your day with the other main museum of the Perth Cultural Centre, the Art Gallery of Western Australia, or head into Northbridge for some international cuisine and street art.

Things to know before you go

Exhibits at the museum are designed to be family-friendly and often include interactive elements to appeal to younger children. The museum offers quiet hours for visitors with sensory needs and tactical maps, as well as Braille guides for visitors with impaired vision. WA Museum Boola Bardip is accessible to people using wheelchairs, with elevator access to all galleries. There are parking garages in the surrounding streets and two at the Perth Cultural Centre itself.

How to get there

The WA Museum Boola Bardip and several other museums are located in the Peth Cultural Centre just north of Perth Station and the central business district. The museum is a short walk from most places in the area, including the train station and Perth Busport, which you may use if you’re coming from the suburbs and places such as Fremantle.

When to get there

The WA Museum Boola Bardip is open daily, from morning through evening, throughout the year, except for several public holidays. Vacation programs offered for breaks in the school year often mean the museum is quite loud and busy at these times, especially over the long summer break.

The other Western Australian Museum sites

The WA Museum Boola Bardip is the state museum. Five other sites belong to the Western Australian Museum, two of which are also in Perth. In Fremantle, you’ll find both the WA Maritime Museum, which looks at the state’s military and sporting maritime history, and the WA Shipwrecks Museum, which explores the many wrecks that dot the coast on the Indian Ocean.
