White Lake Beach (Aspri Limni)

Chania, Crete

Despite the name, Crete’s White Lake (Aspri Limni) Beach does not have a lake: The name refers to the rocks that almost completely enclose the cove, creating a shallow natural lagoon. Between the pale sands, the blue sea, the sun-warmed waters, the palm-leaf umbrellas, and the cluster of protected Cretan date palms, it has an almost tropical feel.

The basics

For those eager to disconnect, look no further: There’s not a lot to do here but soak up the sun, enjoy the lagoon’s warm waters and blissfully uncrowded sands, and perhaps take a photo or two. Most travelers visit White Lake Beach from resort towns in western Crete, such as Chania and Kissamos. However, it’s also possible to stop by after a trip to the better-known—and much more crowded—Elafonisi Beach, which is only a short drive away.

Things to know before you go

  • White Lake Beach is a great choice for anyone who likes to beat the crowds.
  • There are simple, palm-leaf umbrellas during the summer, but no other facilities and little shade. Bring plenty of water, plus an umbrella or a beach tent if you’re traveling with kids or planning a picnic.
  • The lagoon is rocky, so bring water shoes if you intend to swim.
  • White Lake Beach is not wheelchair accessible.

How to get there

White Lake Beach lies on Crete’s far west coast, about a 3-mile (5-kilometer) drive north of Elafonisi Beach or a 25-mile (40-kilometer) drive south of Kissamos. The only way to get here is to drive or hire a driver. There’s a small parking area, but the track is quite rough, so you’ll need a vehicle with a decent clearance.

When to get there

White Lake Beach is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. It is rarely crowded, even in the high season, so visit at a time that works for you. The sun warms the shallow waters quickly, meaning you can generally enjoy a dip as early as April or as late as October.

Discovering western Crete’s best beaches

Crete’s rugged and less touristed west coast is famous for its beaches. The pink-tinted shoreline of Elafonisi Beach draws travelers from across the island, as does Balos Beach, with its postcard-perfect sandbar and azure waters. Head to the pale sands of Kedrodasos Beach for a more secluded experience—although note that it’s popular with nudists.
