Whitechapel Gallery
77-82 Whitechapel High St, London, England
Whitechapel Gallery, located in London’s vibrant East End, is a cornerstone of contemporary art in Tower Hamlets. Over the years, it has exhibited works by legends such as Pablo Picasso and Jackson Pollock while also championing emerging local talent. Beyond its galleries, the space draws visitors with dynamic film screenings, thought-provoking events, and a well-curated bookshop.
The basics
Many visitors opt to explore the Whitechapel Gallery independently, allowing them time to fully appreciate its exhibitions and history at their own pace. However, others wanting to cover more ground can also visit the gallery on a private tour that explores Shoreditch and its surrounding areas, including Petticoat Lane Market, Old Spitalfields Market, and Brick Lane. The gallery is also featured on other walking tours, such as East London food tours and Jack the Ripper-themed tours.
Things to know before you go
Whitechapel Gallery is accessible to wheelchair users; there’s an accessible bathroom on the ground floor.
Baby-changing facilities can also be found on the ground floor.
In the summer months, there’s a pop-up café that serves coffee, cakes, and light snacks.
There is a cloakroom that’s free to use if you want to leave your bags or coats.
It’s typically free to enter the gallery, though select exhibitions cost money to see.
How to get there
The most convenient way to get to the Whitechapel Gallery is to take the Tube to Aldgate East (served by the Hammersmith & City and District lines). You can then walk directly to the gallery by following Whitechapel High Street, which takes around one minute. If you get the 205 or 254 buses, the Aldgate East Station (Stop E) bus stop is also a short walk away.
When to get there
The museum is generally closed on Mondays but is open daily the rest of the week, year-round, typically from late morning to early evening. On Thursdays, the museum has extended hours. To avoid the larger afternoon crowds, the best time to visit is on a weekday morning, such as Tuesday or Wednesday, ideally arriving shortly after opening. This allows for a more peaceful, enjoyable experience.
