Williams, Arizona

Known as the Gateway to the Grand Canyon, Williams is nestled in the pine trees of Northern Arizona and offers access to countless outdoor adventures. Set along historic Route 66, the town has an eclectic wild-west persona, complete with a historic downtown, Grand Canyon Railway Depot, saloons, and Americana-style shops and restaurants.

Williams’ historic hotels, restaurants, and lively culture make it a great place to base while exploring the Grand Canyon and other Northern Arizona attractions. Surrounding the town are ample hiking trails, fishing lakes, mountain biking trails, and ATV routes. You can keep an eye out for wildlife on your adventures, but if you want to guarantee some close-up sightings, head to Bearizona Wildlife Park—a drive-through park set on the outskirts of town.

If you’re headed to the Grand Canyon, consider leaving your car and taking the Grand Canyon Railway from the historic Williams’ depot. If you aren’t staying in Williams but want to visit, pick a group tour that stops by the historic town en route to the Grand Canyon.

  • Reserve your accommodations in advance, the small town fills up during the busy seasons.
  • The town is surrounded by the Kaibab National Forest where ample camping is available.
  • Pack warm layers, the high-elevation mountain town experiences cold nights.

Williams is located 30 miles (48 kilometers) west of Flagstaff on I-40 West. Take exit 165 and follow Historic Route 66 into town. From the Grand Canyon, take Highway 64 South for 60 miles (96 kilometers). If you want a break from driving, book a guided tour or take the Grand Canyon Railway.

Williams is a popular year-round destination, with plentiful hiking and camping in the summer and alpine and cross-country skiing in the winter. For moderate temperatures and the best weather, visit in spring or fall.

Add an entertaining and historic touch to your Grand Canyon adventure by taking the heritage train from the Williams’ depot to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. The 65-mile (105-kilometer) journey takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes each way, and it comes with entertainment. Each vintage train car has a period-clad passenger attendant to share historical details and stories about your surroundings, while western-style musicians roam the train and perform live music.
