Wilson Mountain

The basics

You can hike up to the mountain by taking the 11.6 mile (18.7 kilometer) Wilson Trail No. 10 with 2,300 feet (700 meters) of elevation gain or the shadier, 9.9 mile (16 kilometer) North Wilson Trail No. 123—the two converge partway up the mountain. This hike may take it out of you, and if you take the Wilson Trail, the bulk of the ascent is at the beginning of the hike.

Things to know before you go

• The Wilson Mountain hike is challenging and should not be attempted by novice hikers.

• Bring enough water, sunscreen, and snacks to last all day.

• Never hike alone, and always notify someone of your plans before you set out.

How to get there

To get to the Wilson Mountain Trail No. 10, take the 89A north of Sedona for a couple of miles. The trailhead is just north of Midgley Bridge. If you're taking the North Wilson Trail No. 123, head a bit further north to the Encinoso Picnic Area, about 5 miles (8 kilometers) from Sedona, where the trailhead is located. Red Rock passes are required to park at either trailhead.

When to get there

The best time to hike Wilson Mountain is between April through November, when the weather is at its most pleasant. Do be prepared for warm temperatures and lots of sunlight in July and August. The hikes will take at least six hours, and it’s wise to get an early morning start so that you can beat the heat of the day while on your way up.

The Oak Creek Vista

For incredible views of the Oak Creek Canyon without the demands of taking a long hike, drive up to Oak Creek Vista, about 15 minutes or so north of the trailheads. This roadside panorama point offers epic views over the surrounding area along with a Native American craft market and a seasonal natural history information booth.
