Located at the foot of Lantau Peak, Wisdom Path is a landscaped installation made of 38 wooden columns inscribed with the complete verses from the centuries-old Heart Sutra. Walk the Wisdom Path—a short distance away from the Big Buddha and Po Lin Monastery—to experience art and philosophy in a peaceful environment with lovely views.
The Basics
As you journey along the Wisdom Path, be sure to take your time with the views and installation, which is comprised of 38 tall wooden columns. They are arranged in an infinity pattern and follow the natural terrain of the site, with steps leading up and down the hillside.
It’s easiest to visit the Wisdom Path on a guided tour to Big Buddha and Po Lin Monastery, which usually includes a ride on the Ngong Ping 360 cable car and a visit to a fishing village. For the best value, book a travel pass combo, which often includes transportation, or book a multi-day attractions pass, which is good at more than a dozen attractions in Hong Kong and Macau.
Things to Know Before You Go
There’s no entrance fee to walk the Wisdom Path.
Bring sun protection and water; there’s no shade around the path.
The Wisdom Path is not wheelchair accessible.
How to Get There
The Wisdom Path is located on Lantau Island. Take the MTR to Tung Chung Station (Exit B), and then take the Ngong Ping 360 (about a 25-minute ride), or take bus No. 23 (about a 45-minute ride) to Ngong Ping Village. Walk to Ngong Ping Piazza, and then follow the signs for Wisdom Path, about a 15-minute walk.
When to Get There
The Wisdom Path is open 24 hours a day. However, the cable car, Big Buddha and Po Lin Monastery close around 6pm during the week and around 6:30pm on weekends and public holidays, and many visitors choose to visit all three on the same day.
The Heart Sutra
The Heart Sutra is a prayer that is revered by Buddhists, Confucians, and Taoists alike. It can be translated as “the heart of the perfection of wisdom.” The concept of emptiness is a key theme of the sutra, and it’s represented by the blank last column at the highest point of the Wisdom Path.
