POINT OF INTEREST

Woermannhaus

Bismarck St., Swakopmund, Namibia

With its German-style façade and tower latticed in green and gold, historic Woermannhaus is a Swakopmund icon that’s among the city’s oldest buildings. Today, that national landmark holds a public library and art center. The main draw for visitors, however, is the excellent view from its impressive four-sided tower—vistas at the top stretch from the nearby waterfront to the easterly desert.

The basics

Since its construction in 1905, Woermannhaus has served several purposes: trading company headquarters, a school dorm, and a hostel for merchant sailors. Many tours of historic Swakopmund feature a stop at Woermannhaus. A small fee gains you access to the wooden tower, where an atmospheric wooden staircase climbs toward wraparound views. From the top, spot nearby Swakopmund Jetty and the red-and-white striped lighthouse that marks the popular swim spot Palm Beach. Some of Swakopmund’s other top landmarks are within walking distance, including Hohenzollernhaus and Swakopmund State House.

Things to know before you go

  • Bring cash to pay the small entrance fee upon arrival.

  • Consider packing binoculars if you have them.

  • To access the tower, ask the on-site security guard for a key.

How to get there

Woermannhaus is located on Bismarck Street in the historic center of Swakopmund, about a block away from the palm-lined Arnold Schad Promenade. If you’re coming by car, the closest place to park is the Jetty Parking Area, a 24-hour lot at the entrance to Jetty Bridge. Taxis are also abundant in the surrounding streets.

When to get there

Mild temperatures mean that the months from June through October are the best time to visit Swakopmund. Clear skies make for excellent views from Woermannhaus’ tower during Namibia’s high season, but pre-booking is essential during this popular time. When possible, try to secure tours and accommodations well in advance.

Where to spot German architecture in Namibia

German-style buildings can be found across Namibia, a reminder of the country’s colonial past. Among the most famous is Windhoek’s neo-Gothic Christuskirche (Christ Church), a landmark facing the German-built Parliament Building called the Tintenpalast. The coastal town of Lüderitz also has a collection of German architecture, such as the art nouveau Goerke Haus that adorns the rocky face of Diamond Hill.
