POINT OF INTEREST

Wulai

Wulai, New Taipei

Just a short trip south of Taipei, the green, mountainous district of Wulai is a destination for its scenery and its history. An important center of Atayal Indigenous culture, the region also offers ample opportunity for relaxing in the great outdoors, from its many hot springs to the Wulai Falls and companion cable car.

The basics

Replete with verdant mountains, the Nanshi River, and soothing natural hot springs, Wulai is a popular day-trip destination for both Taipei visitors and residents. Only 30 minutes south of the city by car, the petite town of Wulai is easy to discover on foot. Local hotels are host to various hot spring facilities, and the river offers additional bathing opportunities.

Day tours from Taipei offer an accessible way to visit the region and its hot springs; given Wulai’s proximity to the city, it’s also easy to plan your own day trip.

Things to know before you go

  • Lined with souvenir shops and eateries, the Wulai Old Street is an excellent place to try the region’s culinary specialties and Indigenous dishes.
  • The Wulai Scenic Train, a miniature railway first used to transport lumber, offers a relaxing way to tour the area; for a more active day out, there are a number of hiking trails.
  • The Wulai Falls have an observation deck; meanwhile, the Wulai Scenic Train and the cable car offer different views of the falls.

How to get there

Wulai is located just 12 miles (19 kilometers) south of central Taipei. If using public transit, take the MRT to Xindian Station and transfer to the 849 bus. Taxis and guided tours offer an even quicker way to travel.

When to get there

Wulai is a popular travel destination year round. In the winter, you'll find a less crowded experience, as well as good conditions for enjoying the hot springs.

Where to bathe in the thermal waters

Wulai’s springs are celebrated for their high mineral content and supposed healing properties. Free public springs on the edge of the river are available, and a number of high-end local hotels offer their own spas with natural spring water, including the Full Moon Spa, Hot Spring World Hotel, and the Pause Landis Resort.
