Yeroskipou (Geroskipou)

Yeroskipou, Cyprus, 8200

Once famous for its sacred gardens, dedicated to the Goddess Aphrodite, these days the sleepy village of Geroskipou is best known for its production of lokum, the age-old Cyprian sweet known elsewhere as Turkish delight. It’s also a great place to soak up some local atmosphere, with interesting old sites and a lovely beach.

The basics

While many people come here just to try out local lokum, there’s plenty more to do in this little town. Highlights include the 11th-century Church of Agia Paraskevi, celebrated for its medieval paintings and icons; the fascinating Folk Art Museum, and the sandy Geroskipou Municipal Beach. Not many tours go here, but it's a fantastic place to visit if you want to get away from the crowds and immerse yourself in local culture.

Things to know before you go

  • Yeroskipou is a must-visit for foodies by virtue of its lokum alone.
  • Some lokum manufacturers make low-sugar options that are suitable for diabetics.
  • Yeroskipou is the only spot on earth that bears the EU-protected geographical indication for the production of lokum.

How to get there

Geroskipou is located just outside of Paphos, about a 10- to 15-minute drive or taxi ride from the city center. While it's easiest to visit by taxi or car, there is a bus service along the main Arch Makariou III Avenue (B6), which runs through town.

When to get there

Yeroskipou is a year-round destination, though like the rest of Cyprus it's at its busiest during the hot summer months. However, as it's an off-the-beaten-track destination, crowds are not usually an issue here. Your best bet is to plan your visit depending on what you want to see in town; note that most lokum shops are open from morning until early evening.

Lokum

Cyprus's most popular sweet is lokum, starchy, gelatinous candies dusted with heavy coatings of powdered sugar. These sweets are traditionally flavored with rose water or lemon, but today they are produced in a myriad of unique flavors and make an ideal souvenir. Note that while lokum is known as Turkish Delight in many parts of the world, don’t call it that in Cyprus; Cypriote delight will do.
