Zahringerbrunnen
Kramgasse, Bern, Switzerland, 3011
There are more than 200 historic fountains in Bern’s old town, and the striking 16th-century Zähringerbrunnen (Zähringen Fountain) is one of the most important. This memorial to the founder of Bern sits at the end of the main Kramgasse thoroughfare near the city’s landmark Clock Tower (Zytglogge) in the heart of the UNESCO–listed historic center, and is a highlight of city sightseeing tours.
The basics
Even in a town known as the “City of Fountains,” the Zähringerbrunnen stands out. Its ornate decoration—laden with history and symbolism—makes it one of the most beloved among Bern’s hundreds of public fountains. No tour of the Old City would be complete without a stop to admire this emblematic landmark, and walking and cycling itineraries include this and other top sights, such as the nearby Bern Clock Tower, medieval Bern Minster (Berner Münster), Swiss Parliament House (Bundeshaus), and Bern Bear Park (BärenPark). You can also opt for a tour focusing on the fountains of Bern.

How to get there
Zähringerbrunnen stands along Kramgasse, one of the main streets in the heart of Bern’s old town. The surrounding street is closed to traffic, but you can reach the fountain on foot or by bike from the most important sights in the city and from the Bern train station.
When to get there
Visit on a clear, bright day to appreciate the intricate decoration topping the Zähringerbrunnen and snap photos of its famed armored bear. There is no shelter around the fountain, but porticoed walkways line Kramgasse on both sides and offer an escape from the summer sun, spring rain, and winter snow.
Interpreting the symbolism of Zähringerbrunnen
The decoration of Zähringerbrunnen may seem whimsical, but it’s actually a symbolic celebration of Bern’s legendary origins. A carved statue of an armored bear stands upright atop the fountain, while a cub sits eating grapes at its feet. The bear symbolizes the animal that Berchtold von Zähringer—the city’s founder—shot at the site where Bern now stands. Its shield and banner are both emblazoned with a golden lion on a red background, the Zähringen family herald.
