Zoo Dortmund
Dortmund, Germany
In Dortmund’s Rombergpark Botanical Garden, this zoo is home to about 1,500 animals who inhabit outdoor enclosures. While species from most continents are here, the zoo focuses on South American wildlife, being a noted breeder of giant otters and giant anteaters. Low entry costs and easy access from the city center make it an attractive pick for Dortmund travelers with kids in tow.
The basics
The site is spread over 69 acres (28 hectares), with the animal enclosures set around a signposted circular route. Along with the various paddocks and enclosures, the zoo also has a playground, restaurants, and the usual visitor amenities. A map is provided on entry, or you can download it online in advance.
While the zoo isn’t featured on many guided tours, Dortmund scavenger experiences and self-guided cellphone games may take you to the Rombergpark, which is where the zoo is based.

When to get there
Dortmund Zoo is open daily year-round, from morning to late afternoon, with slightly extended hours between April and October.
