Zoológico de Barranquilla

Barranquilla, Colombia

Zoológico de Barranquilla represents the diversity of Colombia’s wildlife through a wide range of animal enclosures. Along with seeing animals from other continents, such as tigers, elephants, and lions, you’ll encounter native Amazonian species such as tapirs, jaguars, and monkeys. The zoo is also dedicated to rehabilitation at its veterinary center.

The basics

Most visitors explore Zoológico de Barranquilla independently; there are information panels and maps at different points throughout the park, or you can scan a QR code at the entrance to help you navigate. Some Barranquilla tours combine the zoo with other top attractions such as the colorful Monumento Ventana al Mundo sculpture, a symbol of the city’s contemporary culture, and Museo del Carnaval, devoted to the history and culture of the UNESCO–listed celebration.

Things to know before you go

  • There are public restrooms at the zoo.

  • If you get hungry during your visit, stop by the cafeteria for a hot or cold drink, and a snack.

  • There’s an admission fee to enter Zoológico de Barranquilla, though young children go free.

How to get there

If you’re staying in the center of Barranquilla, the zoo is either a 20-minute walk or a 10-minute drive via Cl. 78 and 75. The easiest way to reach it is by using a rideshare app such as Uber or Bolt.

When to get there

Zoológico de Barranquilla is open daily, closing a little earlier on Mondays. The best time to visit this part of Colombia on the Caribbean coast, which has a tropical climate, is during the dry season from October through March.

More nature-focused activities in Barranquilla

If you want to see more Colombian wildlife in its natural habitat, head over to Parque Isla Salamanca, which is just 2.7 miles (4.5 kilometers) from the center of Barranquilla. Here, you can follow the Cocodrilo, Olivos, and Clemanos hiking trails through the mangroves, which are home to rare creatures such as leatherback turtles and crab-eating raccoons.
