Canton was settled by Vermonters in the early 1800s. The names for this town and nine others in the county were chosen from the world atlas in the hope that familiar names would help the land sell more easily. In 1861 Frederic Remington, sculptor and painter of the American West, was born in Canton, where his father was editor of the newspaper.
