The invention of the hookless fastener by Whitcomb L. Judson in Chicago came to the attention of Meadville's Col. Lewis Walker in 1893. Impressed by the new idea, Walker persuaded Judson to build a machine to produce the fastener. After several years of failure, Walker moved the enterprise to Meadville, where Gideon Sundback invented the fastener as it is currently known. The fastener did not become a commercial success, however, until 1923, when the B.F. Goodrich Co. decided to put it on a new line of galoshes.
