Merritt is known for its many lakes. Of particular interest is Nicola Lake, a large warm-water lake 10 kilometres (6 mi.) north of town. For a view of the landmarks, including a giant Canadian flag, hike to the Merritt Lookout from Juniper Drive. Recreational activities in the area include swimming, fishing, sailing, water skiing and windsurfing. Monck Provincial Park, on the west side of the lake, offers camping and picnic facilities.

NATIONAL PARKColville National Forest In northeastern Washington, Colville National Forest covers about 1,100,000 acres. In the approximate center of the forest is Roosevelt Lake; Grand Coulee Dam is to the south. The Columbia River courses through this wilderness area. Gardner Cave, in the forest's eastern half, has stalagmite and stalactite formations that can be toured.
NATIONAL PARKFort Langley National Historic Site Fort Langley National Historic Site is 6.5 kilometres (4 mi.) north of Langley off Hwy. 1 at 23433 Mavis Ave. On the bank of the Fraser River, the 19th-century Hudson's Bay Company trading post was an important supply link in the company's network of fur trading forts west of the Rockies. British Columbia was proclaimed a colony at the site in 1858.
NATIONAL PARKFort Rodd Hill And Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Sites Fourteen kilometres (9 mi.) west of Victoria via Hwy. 1A, Fort Rodd Hill was a coastal artillery fort 1895-1956. Of interest are the loophole walls, underground magazines, artillery stores, command posts, barracks and gun and searchlight emplacements. NATIONAL PARKGulf Islands National Park Reserve Gulf Islands National Park Reserve protects an island landscape of rocky headlands, forested hills and shorelines studded with colorful tide pools. The park encompasses areas of lands scattered over fifteen larger islands and includes many smaller islets and reefs. Waters adjacent to park lands, extending 200 metres (650 ft.) seaward, also are under Parks Canada management.
NATIONAL PARKHanford Reach National Monument Established by presidential proclamation in June 2000, Hanford Reach National Monument embraces 195,000 acres of federal lands on two sides of the Hanford Reservation in south-central Washington. The monument protects the Hanford Reach, the last free-flowing stretch of the Columbia River in the United States above Bonneville Dam. With summer temperatures routinely reaching 100 degrees Fahrenheit and annual rainfall less than 7 inches, this is the hottest and driest part of the state. The area supports a unique community of plants and animals.
NATIONAL PARKKootenai National Forest Kootenai National Forest is in the northwest corner of Montana, with a small section extending into Idaho. High, craggy peaks characterize the 2.2 million-acre region; portions of the Cabinet, Whitefish and Purcell mountains are the main ranges, attaining elevations as high as 8,700 feet. The area's climate is modified Pacific Maritime, and as a result Kootenai has an abundance of plant species more common to the Pacific Coast than to other parts of Montana.
NATIONAL PARKKootenay National Park Straddling the Banff-Windermere Highway (Hwy. 93) from the Continental Divide to the Rocky Mountain Trench, Kootenay National Park encompasses 1,406 square kilometres (543 sq. mi.) of Rocky Mountain landscape. Following the Vermilion and Kootenay river valleys, this slender 94-kilometre-long (63-mi.) park embraces several significant geologic features and is part of the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks UNESCO World Heritage Site.
