First Nations people once used the banks of Wascana Creek for drying buffalo meat and cleaning and stretching the hides. Thus the area became known as Oscana, a Cree word meaning “pile of bones.” In 1882 the Canadian Pacific Railway completed its track across the plains, and the settlement of Pile-O-Bones sprang up at the rail terminal on Wascana Creek.

NATIONAL PARKFort Union Trading Post National Historic Site Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site, reached via US 2 and SR 1804, is 25 miles southwest of Williston, N.D., and 24 miles northeast of Sidney, Mont. Founded by John Jacob Astor for his American Fur Co. in 1828, the trading post became the center for the fur trade on the Upper Missouri River. NATIONAL PARKGrasslands National Park Grasslands National Park encompasses the grasslands in two separate blocks between Val Marie and Killdeer in the southern part of the province. When completed, the park will preserve 900 square kilometres (350 sq. mi.) of Saskatchewan's original mixed-grass prairie, including such topographic features as buttes, badlands and coulees. Among the wildlife species found in the park are black-tailed prairie dogs, golden eagles, rattlesnakes, short-horned lizards, pronghorn antelopes, mule deer and more recently, reintroduced plains bison and black-footed ferrets.Grasslands National Park

NATIONAL PARKRiding Mountain National Park During the Depression of the 1930s, the Depression Relief Program created jobs for the unemployed, 1,200 of whom were put to work constructing buildings for the park 1934-35. As is the case with much of the architecture found in the country's national parks, the style widely used was a rustic design that incorporated local materials. Perhaps the most eye-catching of their projects here is the East Gate Complex on Hwy. 19, which includes a registration building, two staff buildings and an overhead entrance sign.
