Victoria, in an area originally settled in 1685 by French explorer René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, was organized by the Spanish and in 1824 named for a Mexican president, Guadalupe Victoria. The first military capital of the new republic was established here after the Battle of San Jacinto. The city is now a leading cattle market and the home of several petrochemical plants.

NATIONAL PARKPadre Island National Seashore Padre Island National Seashore is parallel to the Gulf coast and reached via the JFK causeway at Corpus Christi. The national seashore covers 70 miles of 113-mile Padre Island, considered the longest undeveloped barrier island in the world. Some 600 species of plants and wildflowers can be found on the sand-duned strip of land, which is only .5 to 3 miles wide. To the east lies the Gulf and to the west the Laguna Madre, including a portion of the Intracoastal Waterway.
