The town grew around Fort Croghan, established by ranchers in 1849 as part of a string of outposts on the Texas frontier. The region's many immense granite outcroppings proved a hindrance for early settlers. G.W. Lacy of nearby Marble Falls tried and failed to trade his granite mountain for a saddle horse. Later he deeded part of it to the state, which used the stone in the construction of the Texas Capitol.
