Camden, overlooking the Ouachita River, was an ancient Native American trail crossing. Early French settlers named the town Fabre's Hill. American pioneers arrived during the 1820s, and soon a thriving cotton-growing industry was established. The proximity of the river made easy the transport of up to 40,000 bales a season.
