Established in 1883 as a coal-mining center, Canmore was the first Canadian Pacific Railroad divisional point west of Calgary. The town also was the site of the biathlon and cross-country ski events of the 1988 Winter Olympics. Year-round recreational activities are abundant; fly-fishing, rock climbing, snowshoeing and dog sledding are just a few activities visitors can enjoy. Hiking, mountain biking and cross-country skiing are popular along the area's numerous trails. The Canmore Highland Games on Labour Day weekend also keeps sports enthusiasts entertained with a variety of athletic competitions. Scottish and Celtic dance and musical performances and sheep dog demonstrations take place during the daylong festival as well. Learn More...
