About LaurelEstablished as a lumber camp on the Southern Railroad, Laurel began to prosper in the 1890s with the arrival of lumber companies from Iowa. These companies encouraged employees to build houses and churches and to remain when timber production ended. This oil field supply center also is headquarters for the Masonite Corp.
