Dumbarton Oaks museum entrance is at 1703 32nd St. N.W., between R and S sts.; the garden entrance is at 31st and R sts. In addition to the Museum and Garden, Dumbarton Oaks is a research center for Byzantine, Pre-Columbian, and Garden and Landscape Studies. The Dumbarton Oaks Museum is known for its specialized collections of Byzantine and Pre-Columbian art. The permanent collection also includes Western medieval and Renaissance art and furniture, as well as a rare book gallery. A garden planned by noted landscape designer Beatrix Farrand incorporates French, English, and Italian design elements.

The original Federal-style house dates to 1801 and has been modified significantly over the years, including the addition of the Pre-Columbian Pavilion, designed by architect Philip Johnson . The 1944 Dumbarton Oaks Conversations, a series of meetings attended by representatives from the United States, United Kingdom, Soviet Union and China, was held here and led to the founding of the United Nations.
