Rock Creek Park is in Northwest Washington and has multiple entrances. Following the course of Rock Creek, the park encompasses 2,000 acres of woodland. Recreational facilities include tennis courts; picnic areas; an 18-hole golf course; landscaped gardens; a rental boat center; playgrounds; and hiking, biking, jogging and horseback riding trails. Peirce Mill and the Rock Creek Park Nature Center and Planetarium (closed at time of publication) are on the grounds.

The remains of Fort De Russy, one of a circle of 68 forts that defended the city during the Civil War, stands near Oregon Avenue and Military Road and can be reached on foot. One-acre Battleground National Cemetery is at 6625 Georgia Ave. N.W. On Beach Drive north of Military Road is the log studio of eccentric poet Joaquin Miller, who wrote “Song of the Sierras.”

Concerts take place at Carter Barron Amphitheatre, 16th Street and Colorado Avenue N.W., in the summer; check the website or phone for schedule.

Recreational activities are permitted. Picnicking is permitted.
