Smithsonian encompasses 19 museums and galleries, including one in Chantilly, Va. and two in New York City. The National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute also is part of the Smithsonian. Ten of the museums line the National Mall from 3rd Street to 15th Street N.W.

They are the Arts and Industries Building (closed at press time), the Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the National Air and Space Museum, the National Museum of African American History & Culture, the National Museum of African Art, the National Museum of American History, the National Museum of Natural History, the National Museum of the American Indian and The Smithsonian Castle.

Near the Mall are the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the National Portrait Gallery, the National Postal Museum and the Renwick Gallery. The Anacostia Community Museum is in Southeast D.C., and the National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center is in Chantilly, Va.

Note: Upon entering, all visitors pass through security and their belongings are checked. Street parking in the vicinity of the National Mall is extremely limited; taking Metrorail is recommended.
