Boston Athenaeum is at 10 1/2 Beacon St. Founded in 1807, the cultural institution and library maintains an impressive collection of manuscripts, maps, archival materials and rare books. More than 600,000 book titles cover such topics as Boston, New England history, English and American literature, and fine and decorative arts.

The organization also holds a number of artworks—including pieces by such painters as Mather Brown, Annibale Carracci, John Singleton Copley and John Singer Sargent—that are exhibited on a rotating basis. The architecturally stunning building, the athenaeum's fourth home, features a neo-Palladian facade.

Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 1 hour, 30 minutes minimum.
