Texas State Railroad

Texas State Railroad is 2.7 mi. e. on US 84 at 789 Park Rd. 70. The Texas state prison system began construction on the railroad in 1881. The line was built to transport iron ore to smelting furnaces at the East Texas State Penitentiary in Rusk. Today, passengers may travel through the “Piney Woods” region on 4-hour, 50-mile round-trip rides to Rusk aboard early 20th-century train cars. Several special-event train rides take place during the year, including the Polar Express and Saturday Starlight trains.

Camping is permitted. Picnicking is permitted. Food is available.
