AAA Editor Notes
Montlake Cut in the Montlake neighborhood, is accessible from East Montlake Park (2802 E. Park Dr. E.) and West Montlake Park (2815 W. Park Dr. E.). The easternmost section of the Lake Washington Ship Canal, the cut connects Portage Bay, an arm of Lake Union, with Lake Washington.

Stairs at both ends of the Montlake Bridge (SR 513) lead down to paved walkways at the edge of the cut. The paths pass beneath the bridge and offer up-close views of boat traffic and the bridge's lifting operation.

The Lake Washington Ship Canal Waterside Trail runs along the south side of the cut and connects 2.82-acre West Montlake Park with 7.1-acre East Montlake Park. Both parks offer outstanding water views. An observation deck at East Montlake Park provides a viewpoint overlooking Union Bay and the eastern entrance to the ship canal.

The cut is the site of the Windermere Cup crew regatta, held in May during the Seattle Yacht Club’s Opening Day Week, which celebrates the beginning of boating season in Seattle.
