Leading west from the city, SR 12 travels about 35 miles through the Purgatoire Valley to 1,200-acre Monument Lake Park, part of Trinidad's city park system. The route then crosses 9,941-foot Cucharas Pass in a portion of the San Isabel National Forest and passes through La Veta, joining US 160 west of Walsenburg.
