Paugus Bay and lakes Winnisquam and Opechee extend into Laconia's city limits, bringing opportunities for water sports. About 5 miles north is Lake Winnipesaukee, the largest lake in the state and a major resort center.

Cultural activities are presented at the Belknap Mill, a noted center for arts and humanities. Outdoor concerts are presented in spring and summer at the grandstand next to Belknap Mill.
