If you're dreaming of a New England vacation destination, consider visiting Providence — Rhode Island’s capital city. It’s a place that combines the welcoming feel of a small town with the amenities of a large city.
This Eastern seaboard city has tons of things to do, whether you come here for a weekend trip or a week-long vacation. In fact, it’s ranked among our top 50 travel destinations in the U.S. You’ll find fun events, incredible dining experiences, parks, museums and much more.
But where do you start when it comes to planning a vacation here? AAA travel experts have created the following Providence travel guide to help you out. You’ll find info on transportation, accommodations, dining, budget tips — and the ideal time to visit the Renaissance City.
How to Get Around Providence
Should you bring your car or rent a car? Or can you depend on buses and other means of transportation? That depends on what your plans are during your trip to Providence.
Driving gives you an easier way to enjoy day trips and get around at your leisure. But public transportation might be more practical — and budget-friendly — if you’re flying into town or taking a train here.
We’ll go over getting around Providence and what to expect, whether you drive or use other transportation.
How Is Driving Around Providence?
T.F. Green International Airport is about nine miles from downtown Providence. If you're renting a car or making a road trip here keep in mind that the downtown area and surrounding highways can get congested during rush hour. But overall, traffic isn’t as heavy here as it is in Boston and other big cities in the northeast.
Providence has many metered spots available for on-street parking in the downtown area. Or you can park in one of the city’s parking garages or lots — but those might cost you more.
What Public Transportation Does Providence Have?
You can walk around the downtown area easily. But Providence also has other options for getting around that may be more convenient and comfortable for you. These include:
- RIPTA buses and trolleys: RIPTA runs multiple bus routes and a few trolley routes throughout Providence. Check RIPTA schedules first.
- Biking: Electric scooter and bike share programs make it easy to ride around the city.
- MBTA trains to/from Boston: If your plans include coming from or going to Boston, MBTA offers convenient round-trip rail service.
Best Time to Visit Providence
Providence is a beautiful place in all seasons. But the right time for you to visit may vary based on your preferences. Consider weather, events, prices and other factors before making your decision.
Fall foliage: Head to Providence in October when the leaves are usually at their peak color. The weather’s mild during this time — but you might have some cool nights. Just note that prices tend to be higher. Fall’s a busy tourist season for Providence.
Local events: Plan to visit in summer’s for some of the best events. There’s the Festival of Gardens in June, Providence Restaurant Week in July, the Rhode Island International Film Festival in August — and other exciting events. Keep in mind that summer also has hotter weather, crowds and higher rates.
Budget-friendly: Visit Providence in winter — as long as you don’t mind the cold. You’ll find lower rates on accommodations and other travel-related expenses during this off-peak season. And there’s another restaurant week that takes place in January.

Visiting Providence on a Budget
Providence may not be as costly to visit as Boston and other big cities, but travel-related expenses can still add up. You can keep costs down in several ways, though. Our AAA travel experts offer the following tips on having a budget-friendly stay in Providence.
1. Save on meals and accommodations with a winter visit. You can save big on your Providence trip if you don’t mind snow and cold weather. Wintertime is when hotels tend to have their lowest prices. And with Restaurant Week in January, you can also cut down on your dining costs. Bundle up, pack plenty of sweaters — and enjoy the quiet beauty of Providence in winter.
2. Look for free things to do in Providence. If your visit falls between March through November, that’s when you’ll find close to 100 bonfires burning near the city’s rivers — also known as WaterFire. It’s a free event with stunning views. Art lovers should check out Gallery Night (every third Thursday of the month) for free admission to museums, art galleries and art shops.
3. Stay in a nearby small town, like Swansea, Attleboro, Smithfield or Warwick. These are all close to Providence, making it easy to explore the city. But hotel rates are typically on the lower side compared to accommodations in the capital city. That helps you reduce your overall trip expenses — without sacrificing too much convenience for location.
4. Use your AAA membership for accommodations, vehicle discounts, and tickets, Having AAA membership gives you so much more than roadside assistance. Members also get discounted rates and other deals on hotels, tours and ticketed attractions, and rental cars. Put those discounts to good use for big savings on your Providence vacation.
5. Save on public transportation costs. Using public buses and other transportation means you don’t have to fill up a tank or spend money on a rental car. You can save even more with RIPTA Wave day passes! These give you unlimited travel until 2 a.m. each day — at a lower price than using full fares for all rides.
