Alberta Legislature Building
10800 97 Ave NW, Edmonton, Canada
Located in the city of Edmonton, the Alberta Legislature Building is home to the province’s legislative assembly and is known for its striking architecture, the opportunity to watch live parliamentary debate, and free tours covering Alberta’s political history. The pretty grounds, spread over 57 acres (23 hectares), are reason enough to visit this Canadian landmark.
The basics
Reserve a guided tour of the Alberta Legislature Building to learn about the political history and legislative process, as well as its art and architecture. Tours are free and can be booked online in advance. Alternatively, plan a visit to coincide with when the Assembly is sitting for the chance to witness live debate—public gallery seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Most visitors spend 3–4 hours here between the tour, the on-site visitor center—which has a theater, exhibition, and gift shop—and listening to parliamentary debate.

How to get there
The Alberta Legislature Building campus spans more than four city blocks from 99 Avenue to Fortway Drive and 109 Street to 106 Street. There’s no parking available on-site, but paid parking can be found nearby on 99th Avenue by Violet King Henry Plaza. Alternatively, take the metro to Government Centre station, from where there’s an underground walkway directly to the Legislature pedway.
When to get there
Opening hours for the Alberta Legislature Building vary depending on the time of year; the winter months have slightly shorter hours than the summer season of mid-May to September. Throughout the year, the Visitor Center is open from Wednesday through Sunday, while the gift shop is open daily. Summer is the most popular time of year to visit, which is reflected by expanded tour times.
Ice skating at the Alberta Legislature Building
During the winter months, the Alberta Legislature Building hosts a seasonal treat: ice skating. The grounds are decorated with thousands of twinkling lights, providing a scenic backdrop for a skating rink set on the field behind the Legislature Building. Admire views of tall trees and the building’s dome from the ice.
