POINT OF INTEREST

Audubon Zoo

6500 Magazine St, New Orleans, LA, 70118

You might forget that you’re in bustling uptown New Orleans as you stroll past stalking jaguars and swinging spider monkeys at the Audubon Zoo. The massive facility is home to more than 2,000 animals from around the world, including Asian elephants, rare leucistic white alligators, and chattering sea lions. A top destination for families, the zoo also hosts special after-hours events just for adults.

The basics

The Audubon Zoo is organized into different sections, including open-air aviaries, reptile houses, and a riverfront jaguar sanctuary. Knowledgeable animal caregivers host talks throughout the day that help you learn more about the creatures; download the zoo app for an updated schedule. In addition, the zoo offers special add-on experiences that let you go behind the scenes and connect with animals more closely under the guidance of an expert.

Things to know before you go

  • While outside food and drinks are not allowed, there are a variety of on-site dining options, including cafés, concession stands, and an ice cream parlor.

  • Visitors are encouraged to bring a reusable water bottle.

  • Most zoo exhibits are wheelchair-accessible, and wheelchairs are available to rent on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • Service animals are allowed in most sections of the zoo, with the exceptions of the Watoto Walk, Audubon Aviary, and Wings of the World exhibit.

  • Consider downloading the Audubon Zoo Mobile App to help you plan your visit, explore an interactive map, and enjoy exclusive offers.

How to get there

You can get to Audubon Zoo by car, streetcar, or bus. If you’re driving, there’s free parking on-site, with visitor pick-ups and drop-offs are permitted at the front gate. You can also take the St. Charles Avenue streetcar line to the Tulane/Loyola stop and walk through Audubon Park to reach the zoo entrance, or board the 11-Magazine, 32-Leonidas-Treme, or 10-Tchoupitoulas bus lines.

When to get there

Plan to arrive at the zoo early in the day for the best chance to spot active animals and avoid the crowds. Keep in mind that the zoo can fill up quickly on weekends, holidays, and school breaks—and tickets tend to cost more during peak times, too. Check the zoo’s official calendar before you book to time your visit with seasonal events ranging from concerts to conservation experiences.

Where to see wildlife in New Orleans

New Orleans may be known for its wild nightlife, but there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy actual wildlife, too. In addition to the zoo, check out the popular Audubon Aquarium to learn about animals living in the bayou and beyond, including penguins and jellyfish. Or, book an airboat tour for chances to see animals in their natural habitat, such as alligators, turtles, and egrets.
