POINT OF INTEREST

Boston Light

Little Brewster Island, Boston, Massachusetts

There's perhaps no better symbol of Boston maritime history than the Boston Light, a quaint lighthouse set on Little Brewster Island. This Boston Harbor landmark was built in 1716, and holds the record for the country's oldest continuously operated lighthouse. Lucky visitors that book a tour can climb the tower for striking Boston views.

A must-see for history buffs and fans of all things nautical, Boston Light has a storied role in the city's history. The original lighthouse on the site was destroyed by the British during the Revolutionary War, and the restored tower—raised to its current height in 1859—sports a beacon that's still operated by the Coast Guard.

The best way to see this National Historic Landmark is on a cruise. Lunch cruises, dinner cruises, and lighthouse sightseeing cruises on Boston Harbor all typically glide past the Boston Light. If you want to head inside the lighthouse, you need to book an appointment-only seasonal group tour. Easily pair a visit to the Boston Light with a day exploring the Boston waterfront, or shopping at Faneuil Hall Marketplace.

  • Visitors should climb the tower to enjoy views all the way from Downtown Boston to the Brewster Islands.
  • Cruises past the lighthouse typically depart from Harbor Islands Welcome Center, steps from the New England Aquarium.
  • The lighthouse is an active Coast Guard site.
  • There are no public restrooms.

Since Boston Light is only accessible by water, you need to book a cruise that visits Little Brewster Island. Tours typically leave from the Boston Harbor Islands Welcome Center on the Downtown Boston waterfront, which is easy to reach by public transit. Both the Aquarium T stop and the Long Wharf (North) ferry terminal are located within walking distance.

As tours to the lighthouse are seasonal, plan to book an appointment-only tour over the spring, summer, or fall. If you plan to visit the island, check in advance to confirm the dates for maintenance and seasonal closures, or opt for a live narrated cruise to enjoy the views, without direct access.

The New England Aquarium is something of an institution, and this family-friendly destination features a plethora of aquatic creatures, an IMAX theater, and a visually stunning 4-story Giant Ocean Tank. For the best value, get discounted entry with a city pass, and pair a visit with a tour of the Boston Light—the aquarium is located just steps from where cruises depart.
