Brooklyn Heights Promenade
Brooklyn, New York City
Although it stretches a short distance—a quarter mile or around half a kilometer—the Brooklyn Heights Promenade offers supersized views. Developed by Robert Moses and built over the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway in 1951, the promenade is a surprisingly peaceful pedestrian walkway. Given its views overlooking Lower Manhattan and the New York Harbor, it’s a popular Big Apple photo stop and filming location.
The basics
Part of Brooklyn’s first Historic Preservation District, the Brooklyn Heights Promenade offers one of New York City's best views: Surrounded by historic mansions and with a view of the Brooklyn Bridge, Lower Manhattan, the East River, and New York Harbor, it’s ideal for soaking up the city’s ambiance. Bring your camera to capture a spectacular perspective of the Big Apple and your Rollerblades: The promenade is a popular outdoor recreation place.
The Brooklyn Heights Promenade is accessible to all and easy to visit independently—but if you want added history, context, and help spotting the sights, it’s worth exploring as part of a guided Brooklyn walking tour.
Things to know before you go
- The Brooklyn Heights Promenade is free for all to visit, and you don’t need to make a reservation to access it.
- There are numerous benches along the path, so you can rest your legs and enjoy the views.
- As there is little to no cover along the walkway, come dressed for the weather and visit on a dry day.
