Cairo Opera House

Opera Square, Zamalek, Cairo, Egypt, 4270024

The first on the African continent, the Cairo Opera House was built in 1869 as the Khedivial (Royal) Opera House, opening with a performance of Verdi’s Rigoletto. While the original building burned down in 1971, the structure that took its place continues the operatic tradition.

The Basics

Part of Cairo's National Cultural Centre, the opera house stages regular performances by the Cairo Opera, the Cairo Symphony, and visiting musicians. For true opera fans, the on-site museum displays a collection of rare photos, documents, and concert brochures chronicling the history of the Khedivial Opera House, as well as jewelry, costumes, and musical scores from the opera Aida (written for the inauguration of the original building). In addition to the 1,200-seat Main Hall, performances are hosted in an open-air theater, a Roman-style amphitheater, and a few smaller venues within the complex.

Some guided tours of Cairo pass by the opera house, and you can purchase show tickets online.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The Main Hall of the Cairo Opera House enforces a strict dress code, usually suit and tie.

  • The opera house is located in the upscale Zamalek area (between downtown Cairo and Giza), known for its high-end hotels, restaurants, and gardens. Keep in mind that during Ramadan, many cafés and restaurants are closed during the day, but reopen in the evening.

How to Get There

Traffic is a big problem in Cairo, so make it easy on yourself and hop on the metro—take the M2 line to the Opera stop. Alternatively, taxis and rideshares are readily available.

When to Get There

Performances are typically held in the evenings. Weather-wise, the ideal time to visit Cairo is from October to April, but you’ll score the best deals in June and September, when it’s hot.

Cruise the Nile

Another popular option, an evening dinner cruise along the Nile River treats you to an illuminated view of the city sights. Choose a set menu, or order à la carte. The meal is normally accompanied by live performances and other onboard entertainment, such as belly dancing.
