POINT OF INTEREST

CaixaForum Madrid

Paseo del Prado 36, Madrid, Spain, 28014

CaixaForum is an art gallery and event space housed in a former electricity power plant that's distinguished by its angular exterior and exterior living plant wall. Given its changing roster of big-name shows, it’s no surprise that it's one of the most popular museums in Madrid.

The basics

The CaixaForum building in the heart of Madrid’s historic center started life as the Central Eléctrica de Mediodía, generating power for the citizens of Madrid. In 2003 the building was completely remodeled by architecture firm Herzog and De Meuron. Perhaps the best-loved addition—and a great photo op backdrop—is the living wall cascading with plants.

CaixaForum hosts multiple exhibitions every year on subjects as varied as the magic of opera to the work of Picasso or Toulouse-Lautrec. What’s more, there are often special events, from kid-friendly activities to workshops on creating your own living wall and movie screenings.

Things to know before you go

  • Access to the museum is via paid ticket—purchase your tickets in advance to avoid waiting in line.
  • CaixaForum is wheelchair accessible.
  • Check before visiting to see what exhibitions are showing.

How to get there

CaixaForum is just off Paseo del Prado—one of Madrid’s most famous streets. The closest metro is Estacion del Art, served by Line 1 (blue). Alternatively you can walk from other locations in the museum quarter, take a taxi, or join a hop-on hop-off bus tour.

When to get there

CaixaForum is open seven days a week and closed on select public holidays, including Christmas Day and New Year's Day. There’s usually at least one special exhibition happening at any time. The museum is busiest on weekend days, so visit during the week for a quieter experience.

Explore Madrid’s museum quarter

From CaixaForum to Reina Sofia museum, the world-famous Prado and the Joan Miró Foundation, the Paseo del Prado is lined with excellent museums and galleries. Each one has a different specialty—the Prado is home to an enormous collection of Spanish paintings while the Reina Sofia has Picasso’s masterpiece, Guernica. Find the museum that suits your interest, book your tickets, and enjoy.
