Clock Tower
Tuzcular İmaret Sokak, Muratpaşa, Antalya, Turkish Riviera, 07100
Standing on the edges of Antalya Old Town (Kaleiçi), the Antalya Clock Tower (Antalya Saat Kulesi) testifies to the region’s storied past. Built on the remnants of the city’s Roman walls and converted into a crenelated clock tower by the Ottomans in the early 20th Century, this stone fixture is an instantly recognizable Antalya landmark.
The basics
Set in Antalya’s Castle Gate (Kalekapisi) district, it’s no surprise the Clock Tower is a magnet for tourists. The 72-foot (22-meter) edifice is a highly visible rendezvous point with shops and restaurants—plus tram, bus, cab, and horse-drawn carriage ranks—around it, making it great for people-watching and a convenient gateway into Antalya Old Town.
Roam the neighboring tree-shaded square, buy a fresh pomegranate juice from a stall, and shop for souvenirs in the Old Town. Most guided Antalya walking tours include stops outside the tower to learn its history. Other options include city electric bike and scooter tours, plus wider excursions that include it alongside other Antalya attractions like the Duden waterfalls.
Things to know before you go
Be content with only seeing the tower exterior, as visitors aren’t allowed inside. You can view it at your leisure from the nearby restaurants, which offer shade, Wi-Fi, and restrooms.
Wear comfy shoes if you’re continuing into the Old Town lanes: They’re cobbled and uneven.
The tower’s surroundings are wheelchair accessible.
How to get there
The Clock Tower neighbors Cumhuriyet Caddesi avenue, just north of Antalya Old Town. To see it, walk uphill through the latter’s alleyways or follow Ataturk Caddesi from the marina, where you can visit cafés and malls en route before joining Cumhuriyet Caddesi. Otherwise, catch the KL08 bus from Ataturk Boulevard or the T2 tram—both stop near the tower.
When to get there
Beat the mid-morning tour groups by visiting earlier and relaxing over coffee at the surrounding alfresco restaurants. Alternatively, head here in the quieter late afternoon when the crowds have thinned. Or, visit after dark, camera in hand, when the tower is photogenically illuminated, and enjoy dinner with a view.
What to see near the Clock Tower
Don’t miss a look at the nearby Yivli Minare Mosque, first built in the 13th century, which has a beautifully fluted minaret. Next, hunt for Turkish handicrafts amid the Old Town’s wood-balconied shops and markets, and land at another historical sight—Hadrian’s Gate. This stunning, 2nd-century triumphal structure is the only one remaining of Antalya’s original city gates and was built to commemorate a visit by Roman emperor Hadrian in 130 AD.
