Custard Factory
Birmingham, West Midlands
Situated in the Digbeth neighborhood of Birmingham, the Custard Factory is a creative space hosting a mix of offices, cafés, shops, and restaurants. It gets its name because Bird's Custard—a classic British custard mix that’s been around since the 1800s—was once produced here.
The basics
While many people come to the Custard Factory to eat, drink, and shop, there's plenty more to see at the complex. Look out for street art, ranging from a mural dedicated to Ozzy Osbourne to work inspired by the old-time Bird’s Custard label. Fans of the TV series Peaky Blinders, which is set in Birmingham, may especially appreciate a visit to this historic-turned-hipster structure, and some Peaky Blinders–themed tours stop here.
Things to know before you go
- The Custard Factory is a must-visit for people interested in industrial history, as well as those into shopping and dining.
- The complex is partially accessible to wheelchairs, with ramps and elevators in some areas.
- Free public restrooms—including wheelchair-accessible options—are available on-site.
How to get there
The Custard Factory is located in Digbeth in central Birmingham, about a 15-minute walk from the Birmingham New Street Station, the city’s main railway hub. Bus 97 and 97A stop just south of the factory on Gibb Street. If you’re coming by car, you can park at the Zellig Car Park, on the western side of the complex.
When to get there
It's best to plan your visit to the Custard Factory based on what you want to do there. Many shops and restaurants are closed on Mondays, but they all set their own hours, so check ahead before you set out. Note that the Custard Factory's reception area is only open on weekdays.
Where to eat and drink at the Custard Factory
The Custard Factory has loads of great places to eat and drink, whether you want to share Spanish tapas at Rico Libre or splurge on the multicourse menu at 670 Grams. If you're in the mood to play, stop at Chance & Counters, a board game café, or visit NQ64 Arcade Bar for a round of pinball.
