Eugenides Foundation New Digital Planetarium

387 Syggrou Ave., Athens, Greece, 175 64

Stargazers and science buffs can marvel at the mysteries of the universe at the spectacular Eugenides Foundation Planetarium. As well as being the world’s largest, Athens’ digital planetarium is also one of the most technologically advanced and offers visitors 3D trips into space as well as IMAX and OMNIMAX astronomy-themed movies.

The basics

The planetarium’s theater seats 280 and features a 360-degree screen that is 10 times the size of a normal movie screen. A number of different documentaries are screened each day and cover everything from the moon landing to the exploration of the cosmos. This family-friendly attraction offers a break from ancient history for younger travelers and can be visited as part of a kid-focused Athens tour or via a hop-on-hop-off bus tour of the city’s highlights. In addition to the theater, the planetarium is home to a science museum with interactive multimedia exhibits; labeling is in Greek and English.

Things to know before you go

  • The planetarium offers a special program of films for younger children and an interactive science museum, making it a fun stop for families.
  • Films are between 30 and 40 minutes long and show times may change, so check schedules online ahead of your visit.
  • The on-site café is convenient for snacks and light meals, and there is a gift shop that focuses on science-themed toys, kits, and activities.
  • You can rent headphones at the planetarium’s gift shop to hear the film in English.
  • Wheelchair users and others with limited mobility will be able to access all parts of the planetarium.

How to get there

The Eugenides Foundation Planetarium is located not far from Athens’ port on Syggrou Avenue and can be reached by a number of bus and tram lines, or via the hop-on-hop-off bus or private family tour that includes transportation between Athens’ sights.

When to get there

The highlight of the planetarium is its dazzling theater, so check schedules in advance to time your visit with one of the movies shown throughout the day. Wednesday through Sunday the theater is open until late evening, so you can catch an after-dinner show.

Athens’ Top Family-Friendly Attractions

In addition to the planetarium, there are a number of attractions and sights in Greece’s capital city that will delight younger travelers weary of archaeological ruins. The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre is home to parks and playgrounds, and regularly holds events and activities for kids. At the Floating Naval Museum Battleship Averof, families can explore a battleship and a trireme, a type of ancient Greek ship. Finally, the Flisvos Marina Give offers a beautiful beach where kids can swim and relax.
